Every year the OK Franchise Division (OKFD), a member of the Shoprite/Checkers group, honours the top stores in four of their derivatives by rewarding the winning stores with the very prestigious Franchisee of the Year title.
OK Foods Cambridge recently won the title as the best OK Foods store in South Africa and Namibia. This is the second year in a row they receive this prestigious award, proof of the consistent performance and business diligence that make OK Foods Cambridge a retailer to be reckoned with by their opposition.
Andreas Efstratiou is the dynamic owner behind the success of OK Foods Cambridge in East London. He believes in regularly making small changes to keep things interesting for the customers. Large-scale upgrades however also have their place.
An immaculate store appearance, a strong service culture and Efstratiou’s open management style are all key factors of the store’s success. Allowing team members to make suggestions and to take part in discussions give them ownership of the store. A good range and a consistently fully stocked store add to the reputation as a leading retailer.
OK Grocer Theunissen received for award for being the best OK Grocer store in South Africa and Namibia. They joined the OK group in 2010.
Johan and Celeste Bothma have been in charge of the store since 2002, but the business has been part of the family since 1975. The conversion to an OK Grocer has yielded highly successful results, including increased profit.
To the Bothmas, service is the keyword of their business strategy. They can regularly be found on the floor where they are interacting with the customers, packing bags at the till points and even carrying customers’ shopping bags to their cars.

OK MiniMark Pietermaritzburg recently won the national Franchisee of the Year title as the best OK MiniMark store in South Africa and Namibia.
The winning team behind the success of OK MiniMark Pietermaritzburg are dynamic brothers Justin and Greg Maskell, who also own a video/DVD rental outlet. They opened the OK MiniMark store next to the video store on 11 September 2008. The is the second time they’ve won the Franchisee of the Year award, and as OK MiniMark Pietermaritzburg is one of the youngest stores in the OK stable, this achievement proves they have been dedicated to business excellence from day one. The Maskells believe in constant business nurturing as the core of the strategy, perfectly suited to the ever-changing nature of the retail industry.
Megasave Nylstroom recently won as the best Megasave store in South Africa and Namibia. This is the third time they receive this prestigious award.
Angelo Abbatemarco is the man in charge of the highly successful Megasave Nylstroom. This wholesaler is especially famous for their comprehensive range, which is approximately 200 times bigger than the average wholesaler range and includes car audio and accessories, an extensive camping range, computers and computer accessories, curtains and carpets as well as catering equipment, to name but a few. They recently added a butchery to their offering.
Abbatemarco believes there are three basic elements that form the foundation of a profitable wholesaler: good prices, adequate stock and exceptional customer service. When these three factors are in place, one can be assured that the customer is satisfied when he/she leaves the store. According to Angelo the quality of customer service is what will ultimately distinguish you from your competitors.
To identify the winners of the Franchisee of the Year awards, stores are judged over the course of the year on criteria that give a complete overview of all the aspects of a leading retailer: growth, general store standards, customer service, staff motivation, service department offerings and displays, community involvement, administrative excellence and loyalty.
