New BBBEE operators in FMCG space

Nkunzi Investment Holdings’ (Nkunzi), together with a management team comprising managing director, Nils Stromnes, marketing director Samantha Geyle and sales director, Byron Kane, have acquired Unsgaard Packaging from Iver Unsgaard. The acquisition was finalised on 1 September 2009 and secures Nkunzi Unsgaard’s position as one of only a few BBBEE-rated companies operating in the fast-moving-consumer-goods (FMCG) sector.

Based in the Cape, Unsgaard has built a solid reputation over the past 70 years as a manufacturer of a wide range of fine quality paper-related disposable products, including Cherubs, Petals, Comfitex, Cool Wipes as well as home-care under the Hygenix brand-name.

“It is our intention to continue to promote and drive the reputable and established brands within this business and to nurture growth and development through innovative marketing, quality product development and exceptional service to the Unsgaard customers,” says Nkunzi Unsgaard chairman, Patrick September.

The new Unsgaard directors bring a wealth of experience to the business. Stromnes, Geyle and Kane have worked together for the past seven years, successfully building a number of well-known brands in the FMCG arena. In addition, a number of the original Unsgaard staff have been retained as part of the new management team.

“Our aim is to provide South African consumers with good quality, value-for-money products that are made locally,” says Nils Stromnes. “We are constantly exploring ways to improve and develop our products at every level,” he continues. “For example, we are extremely proud of the fact that our ‘Cherubs’ baby-wipes are uniquely environmentally-friendly, as they are the only flushable and bio-degradable baby wipes in South Africa.”
