SAPICS hosts SCM Education Excellence Awards

2008/04/24

Education and skills must be placed at the top of every agenda at board level in South Africa, and it’s critical that the supply chain industry develops an expanded sense of responsibility for its own education needs.

This was stressed by John van Wyk, Barloworld Logistics divisional director (Marketing & Sales), in his opening address at the recent Supply Chain Management Education Excellence Awards, which are hosted by SAPICS (The Association for Operations Management of Southern Africa) and the Federation of Supply Chain Management Associations (FSCMA).

These awards, now in their second successful year, recognise and reward excellence in supply chain management education, and are aimed at raising awareness of efforts to develop the industry’s people capabilities. In his opening, John commended SAPICS for the initiative. “It is proactive and shows continued support for the development of the industry. Skills, and the supply chain industry’s access to them, are going to define successful organizations from the ‘also-rans’,” he stated.

John said that while many expected government to provide all the answers to the skills crisis, the industry needed to accept that it has a fundamental role to play. “We need to work aggressively to achieve recognition for industry qualifications, and we must step up our efforts to attract broadly skilled people into this industry and re-train them with supply chain management skills. We must become activists for education and skills development,” he declared. “We must work with government agencies to accelerate learning, and campaign for maths, science and engineering as ‘sexy’ careers. We must increase our investment in skills and vocational development. We must create role models, like our nominees tonight, who will be beacons for other companies and individuals to follow.”

The panel of judges for the SCM Education Excellence Awards comprised independent industry experts Brian Willcox, Beverly Kujawa and Barry Culligan.
