100% recyclable eco-friendly hangers the new alternative
2008/05/08
Enter the average plastic and wire retail store hanger: functional yet expendable. Unfortunately so expendable that, once it ends up in the box behind the cashier counter, the majority of plastic hangers eventually finds its way to a landfill somewhere in South Africa.
As most retail clothing items are pre-hung on plastic hangers at manufacturers, the lifespan of each hanger is as long as it takes to sell that specific item of clothing.
The average plastic and wire hanger is manufactured from inexpensive, unrecyclable material in order to reduce upfront cost. According to Green Heart Global, a United States-based organisation, the typical plastic and wire hanger can consist of some seven types of low-grade plastics which make it vastly impossible to recycle. These hangers are often universally banned from recycling lines and, hence, end up on landfills.
GreenHabitatHangers, a Gauteng-based company, now developed a 100% recyclable hanger in a bid to curb the endless stream of plastic hangers that ends up in South Africa's already overburdened landfills.
These eco-friendly hangers are manufactured from 100% recycled post-consumer waste. "Previously used, natural and biodegradable board and paper are used in this process," explains Werner Lindeque, co-founder of GreenHabitatHangers.
"The pulp is converted into a robust, corrugated board from which our hangers are manufactured," he explains.
