Game gives looting affected stores a face lift, starting in Soweto and Vosloorus

Retailer Massmart has begun refurbishing its Game stores damaged by the looting and unrest events of July 2021, with two of its strong performing stores reopening this week.

The Walmart-owned retailer opened its Jabulani Mall store in Soweto on Thursday, with its Vosloorus store located inside Chris Hani Crossing Mall set to open on Friday. A total of 10 Game stores suffered damage and have remained closed since.

The stores will be reopened in a staggered approach with three planned for next month in Pietermaritzburg, Pinetown, and Empangeni. The company remains uncertain when it will reopen its West Street store in Durban, whose actual structure was destroyed.

"The one in West Street in Durban, the actual structure was damaged. That one we don't know because actual physical brickwork needs to be done, and steelwork… needs to be completely redone in that shop," Katherine Madley, Game's spokesperson and vice-president for marketing, told Business Insider South Africa.

The Jabulani Mall store, 4050m2 in size, has a broader wellness category comprising bicycles, Trojan gym equipment, foosball tables, and other sporting goods.

Madley said some of the improved categories in the store include its clothing offering, which is relatively new to Game. Its baby offering is also counted among the more popular categories.

"We've made baby bigger, and clothing is completely a 'brand new' in Game. We're not a fashion retailer; our whole strategy with clothing is that 80% of our stock is 80% in everybody's cupboard," said Madley.

The store, modelled to be more interactive, features a track around its wellness department that customers can use to test bicycles.

The refurbishing of the stores is being undertaken in line with Massmart's retail reimagined turnaround strategy.

The 'Retail Reimagined' concept is about transforming and improving customer experience, said Andrew Stein, vice-president of Game.

"These specific stores are important to their respective communities and continue to attract increased foot traffic, which is why they are the first of 68 stores that we plan to revamp this year," he said.

"We continue to make positive strides in our strategy while remaining committed to our value proposition of offering a wide product range at unbeatable prices for our price-conscious consumers," Stein said.
