Morrisons opens UK’s first takeaway inside a supermarket

A Morrisons store in Bradford debut the UK’s first takeaway inside a supermarket. The retailer has teamed up Bombay Bites Express, a local family-run business, and online takeaway delivery firm Just Eat, to launch the concession at its Victoria Shopping Centre store.

The Bombay Bites Express outlet will open from 8am to 8pm Monday to Saturday, and 9.30am to 4pm on Sundays. Its menu includes Indian breakfasts, curries and desserts.  Customers will be able to dine in-store, collect their takeaway order at the end of their grocery shop, or have it delivered via Just Eat.

As part of its turnaround strategy, Morrisons has been extending the range of services available in its stores to help drive footfall. It has already agreed tie-ups with the likes of Timpson, Amazon and Doddle.

Rebecca Singleton, Morrisons Director of Local Solutions, said: “We have listened to the customers who shop in our Victoria store and they told us they’d love a takeaway service as an extra reason to shop with us.”

Samir Kader, Director at Bombay Bites, said: “We are thrilled that we have the opportunity to partner with large and trusted brands such as Morrisons and Just Eat, so we can really bring something new into the food industry.”

He added: “We will strive to continuously innovate and hope that one day we can become the trusted brand for Indian Food throughout the UK.”

Meanwhile, Graham Corfield, UK Managing Director at Just Eat, commented: “At Just Eat we love innovation. We have over 27,000 Restaurant Partners across the UK, but this is the first to open inside a supermarket. Bombay Bites is what Just Eat is all about, producing great food at the heart of the community, and thanks to Morrisons we have a local business expanding. This is a perfect hat-trick for us all.”
