U.S distillers showcase new products in SA

The Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (DISCUS) is set to introduce products from a number of leading and craft distillers in a series of tasting events around South Africa this year.

Fine American distilled spirits to be previewed to South African buyers, spirits aficionados


In line with growing South African market interest, the Distilled Spirits Council will showcase distinctive U.S. spirits throughout the year in South Africa.


In 2018, South African imports of American spirits totalled $19.7 million, up 22 percent from 2017 and 42 percent from 2016. In 2018, imports of American whiskey reached $14.1 million, up 34 percent from 2017 and nearly 60 percent from 2016, accounting for 71 percent of total imports of American spirits.

New to the South African market and to be presented at a series of tasting events this year are:


Putting Maryland back on the map as a premier distiller of Rye whiskey, Sagamore Distillery opened its award-winning five-acre waterfront distillery campus in Baltimore in 2017.

·        Sagamore Spirit Signature Rye Whiskey – a traditional Maryland-style Rye with a palate of candied dried orange peel, notes of clove and nutmeg and lingering hints of walnut and brown sugar.


·        Sagamore Spirit Cask Strength Rye Whiskey – fully aged and ‘exploding with colour and flavour’, with a smooth dark chocolate palate paired with intense notes of black pepper and brown sugar.


·        Sagamore Spirit Double Oak Rye Whiskey – an award-winning spirit aged for four years before being placed in a second oak barrel to deliver flavours of caramel and dark vanilla.

Uncle Nearest        

Uncle Nearest Tennessee whiskey is named for Nathan ‘Nearest’ Green, the master distiller who taught distilling techniques to Jack Daniel, founder of the Jack Daniel’s Tennessee whiskey distillery.  The whiskey is distilled utilising an intricate 11-step, 25-day process and a one-of-a-kind triple charcoal mellowing system.

·        Uncle Nearest 1856 Premium Whiskey – features a bold and spicy upfront taste that mellows with sweet caramel and maple.

Dad’s Hat

Dad’s Hat draws on Pennsylvania’s tradition of distilling Rye whiskey since the 1800s, using the time-honoured methods that once made the state renowned for its Rye whiskey.

·        Dad’s Hat Rye – a lush and complex rye in the classic, spicy Pennsylvania Style, with hints of pepper and cinnamon spice, green apple, fig and cocoa powder with a long smooth and lingering finish.


The first distillery in Chicago since Prohibition, Koval focuses on unique whiskeys and other distilled spirits, which are handmade using local, organic ingredients.

·        Koval Single Barrel Rye – with only the “heart cut” of the distillate and aged in new American oak from Minnesota, this Rye delivers a maple entry and spicy finish.


·        Koval Single Barrel Bourbon – with the requisite mash bill of at least 51% corn, Koval Single Barrel Bourbon also features millet to render a whisper of vanilla, finishing with peppery caramel, and a wisp of clove-spiked tobacco.


·        Koval Dry Gin – with a unique variety of woodland spices, juniper and wildflowers envelop the nose, while the taste is dry, yet vibrant.

Golden Moon Distillery

This award-winning distillery in Colorado has upgraded and expanded, and now offers a broad range of distilled spirits.

·        Gunfighter American Bourbon –aged in new oak barrels and finished in used French Port barrels to deliver a unique smoothness and complexity.


·        Gunfighter American Rye Whiskey – aged for at least six months in new American oak barrels and then finished in used French Port Barrels, giving the whiskey a unique smoothness and complexity, coupled with the spiciness of Rye.


·        REDUX Absinthe – a premium Absinthe that is both a classic traditional Absinthe Verte, and a unique new creation at the same time.


·        Golden Moon Crème de Violette – distilled using the finest hand-selected botanicals available, including blue violet flowers and buds, Crème de Violette is a classic cocktail ingredient that can also be enjoyed by itself.


·        Golden Moon Dry Curaco – distilled using Curacao orange peel with a touch of saffron and lightly oak aged to deliver a great cocktail ingredient that can also be enjoyed neat or over ice.


·        Golden Moon Kummel – known as the "Putting Mixture" at Scotland’s golf courses, Kümmel is a sweet liqueur flavoured with caraway, cumin and fennel.


·        Golden Moon Gin – distilled using herbs and botanicals from the Front Range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains to deliver a highly floral aroma and gentle, refined taste.


·        Golden Moon Amer dit Pitcon – produced using the finest hand-selected herbs, spices and botanicals, these bitters can be enjoyed alone or in cocktails.

Whistling Andy

Whistling Andy Distillery in Bigfork, Montana, creates distilled spirits with locally grown ingredients.

Whistling Andy Whiskey – a four grain whiskey with a sweet fruity nose leading into warm spiciness mid palate and smooth finish with accents of toasted caramel and well-rounded oak flavours.

Whistling Andy Hibiscus Coconut Rum – distilled incorporating dried hibiscus flowers and coconut, for a clean floral rum with hints of banana, ripe plum, licorice and apricot.

Whistling Andy Gin – Whistling Andy produces a dry Crisp Cucumber Gin and delicate and spicy Pink Peppercorn and Pear Gin.

Whistling Andy Whiskey – Whistling Andy Harvest Select Whiskey is a four-grain whiskey with a warm spicy palate and accents of toasted caramel.

Whistling Andy Spirit of Sperry Vodka – a huckleberry flavored vodka.
